" Stillwater Spring Canal"

It's hard to imagine the amount of labor which must have gone into constructing the Erie Canal system.  It not only interconnects many major cities in NY state but also connects several of the finger lakes and gives their boaters access to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean.    This stretch of the canal runs above Seneca and Cayuga Lakes across a section of wildlife preserve known as Howland Island which is part of the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.   The canal is very "undeveloped" in this area and is actually a bit over it's banks in the early spring.   The setting sun has left a brilliant orange glow above the slowly budding tress that populate the shorelines.
